Sweeper
While creating a complex diagram, sometimes you may find it difficult to put more shapes into your diagram, or that your diagram is becoming cramped and hard to read. Using VP-UML, the sweeper tool can be used to easily create space to place shapes so shapes can be organized easily and your diagram looks better.
Using Sweeper
Taking the following Use Case Diagram as an example, click on the
Sweeper icon on the diagram palette.
Click anywhere on the diagram while holding your left click, a plus sign will be appeared in the diagram. You can then move the mouse left and right to create some vertical spaces, or move the mouse up and down to create some horizontal spaces between shapes.
Example 1
Create some vertical spaces by moving the sweeper to the right (shown by the yellow arrow) to create some spaces between use case shapes and ATM Machine actor shape.
Example 2
Create some vertical spaces by moving the sweeper downwards (shown by the yellow arrow) to create some spaces between Deposit Money and Pay Bills use case shapes.
'All above' or 'All below' Messages
Animated Demo
Selecting all above or all below a message in sequence diagrams allows you to move only certain messages. This allows you to space out or condense your diagram as required. Here we will reduce the space needed for the diagram.
To move all the messages above or below a certain message, first select a message.
Right click on it and choose either ‘All messages above’ or ‘All messages below’.
By clicking and dragging the message you can move all the selected messages as one. The selected messages are shown in the orange highlight box below.
